What does a school librarian have to say about I-001 and I-638?

Daniel Harada, Seattle

As a Seattle school librarian, I want to share why measures I-001 and I-638 will make schools unsafe places for all students.

Being a school librarian working in Federal Way, I know how important it is for our students to have access to safe spaces to express themselves. I remember the first LGBTQ student who came out to me and how meaningful it was for them to have a confidential place to share something so personal. I also remember the relief the student felt afterward, knowing they would be protected.

If I-001 passes, educators like me will be forced to out LGBTQ+ students to unsupportive parents, putting them in danger of violence or homelessness. Under I-638, many girls who want to play K-12 sports will have to undergo invasive genital exams.

If these harmful initiatives pass, I worry students won’t be able to access help when they need it. I worry adding unnecessary barriers like sex verification will discourage all girls from playing school sports.

I hope voters will join me and say NO to hate in Washington state.
