New Ads Tell Voters: I-001 and I-638 Will Harm Our Children

This weekend voters will start seeing new ads opposing I-001 and I-638. Each ad illustrates the dangers of these initiatives, bankrolled by MAGA mega-donor Brian Heywood, to Washington’s children.

To educate voters that I-001 will endanger child abuse victims, “The Call”  shows an abusive father receiving a call from his victim’s school, as his daughter watches in fear near by.

In “The Call”, a voiceover says “This call is dangerous. It’s a teen victim’s private information being shared with her abuser. Mandated by the government if 001 passes. Initiative 001 is poorly written. It would give an abuser access to their teen’s medical and counseling records, even after they’ve been charged with sexually assaulting their own child. 001 would betray children right when they need help the most. It’s not simple. And it’s certainly not safe. Vote no on 001.”

Legal experts say I-001 is so poorly written that it removes record protections for victims of child abuse by allowing abusers to demand their victim’s records even if the abuser is accused or charged with raping, sexually assaulting, or beating their own child.

To inform voters that I-638 will require girls to submit to sex inspections, including genital exams, DNA tests, or hormone tests, to play school sports, “Inspection” shows a line of school age girls in a basketball gym anxiously waiting to go through a door labeled “Exam Room.”

In “Inspection” a voiceover says: “It’s terrifying. Girls required to undergo invasive sex verification just to play sports. But that’s what initiative 638 would mean. To enforce a blanket ban on a few transgender girls. Invasive invasive sex inspections for girls, at any level, even elementary school. And with 638 birth certificates don’t count. There’s no clear appeal process for parents to protect their daughters. And if your daughter is too tall or too fast, that’s even more harassment. Vote no on 638.”

More than 100 Washington pediatricians, family doctors and nurses say IL26-638’s new sex inspection requirements will force them to conduct medically unnecessary and potentially harmful tests on elementary, middle and high school girls including genital exams, genetic or hormone tests, as a new part of sports physicals.

IL26-638 (3)(2) says: "A student who elects to participate in individual or team competition activities intended for female students only governed under subsection (1) of this section shall provide, as part of the required routine sports physical examination, a health examination and consent form or other statement signed by the student's personal health care provider that verifies the student's biological sex, relying only on one or more of the following: The student's reproductive anatomy, genetic makeup, or normal endogenously produced testosterone levels."

I-001 and I-638 are opposed by the WA State Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, the Seattle Times Editorial Board, the WA State PTA, WA State Nurses Association, and hundreds of others.
