SEN. PATTY MURRAY, GOVERNOR FERGUSON, AFFILIATED NORTHWEST TRIBES, CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, SCHOOL BOARD, AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS STRONGLY OPPOSE I-638 and I-001

As election day nears, the momentum against I-638 and I-001 continues to grow. Senator Patty Murray and Governor Ferugson are both speaking out against both of the these harmful initiatives, joining hundreds of elected officials and candidates across Washington, opposing the measures:

U.S. Senator Patty Murray said:

"I-638 would force every girl who wants to play a school sport to have a doctor verify her sex, often through an invasive physical exam, every time she needs a sports physical--that is disturbing and totally unacceptable. And I-001, sold as 'parental rights,' would actually weaken the requirement that schools notify parents about crimes against their kids at school. These initiatives won't make a single kid safer or a single game fairer.  Before I was a Senator, I was a PTA mom, and I'm joining the Washington State PTA in urging a NO vote on I-001 and I-638. I know when something is being sold to parents under a false label, and that's exactly what these initiatives are: a cynical political project being bankrolled by a single far-right megadonor. When your ballot arrives, vote NO on I-001 and NO on I-638."

Washington State Governor Bob Ferguson, who has previously spoken out against I-001, said about I-638:

“Washingtonians should know that I-638 won’t create opportunities for girls but it will force them into invasive sex verification exams in order to participate in sports.  That’s why I’m urging Washingtonians to vote no.”

The Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, representing 57 different tribal nations, recently passed a resolution opposing I-638 and I-001.

And the largest Chamber of Commerce in the state, the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, representing 2,500 companies, has also come out opposing both initiatives. 

Additionally, the cities of Seattle, Tacoma, Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline, along with King County and the Seattle School Board have passed resolutions opposing I-638 and I-001. 

Initiatives 638 and 001 are opposed by the WA State Nurses Association, the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the League of Women voters, and hundreds of organizations, doctors, nurses, counselors, educators, and businesses. The Washington State PTA opposes both I-638 and I-001, but is not affiliated with and does not coordinate with our coalition.
